The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) organized six thematic discussions within the framework of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) from November 12 to 14, 2024, in Vienna. The Government Office for Combating Drugs of the Republic of Serbia participated as an observer in this significant event, which gathered representatives of governments, international organizations, and experts from various fields.
The meetings covered the following topics:
1. Expanding Range of Drugs and Diversifying Markets – Addressing new trends in the drug market and the increasingly complex array of substances.
2. Synthetic Opioids and Non-medical Use of Prescription Drugs – Discussions on the challenges and the growing use of synthetic opioids, as well as the misuse of prescription medications.
3. Challenges in Illicit Cultivation and Production of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances – Review of trends in illegal drug production and identification of key issues in this area.
4. Illicit Trafficking in Substances and Precursors, and Domestic Diversion of Precursor Chemicals – Focusing on combating the illegal trade of precursors and the need for improved monitoring of chemical trafficking.
5. Legal, Scientific, and Regulatory Challenges in Scheduling Substances – Exchange of views on the complexities of identifying and classifying new psychoactive substances.
6. Other Substantive Matters – Discussion on various issues relevant to the global fight against drugs.
These discussions reaffirmed the importance of global cooperation and coordination in combating drug abuse and addressing emerging threats posed by the evolving market of psychoactive substances. November is also recognized as Addiction Awareness Month, further highlighting the significance of this event and the collective efforts of all participants to enhance cooperation and information sharing at the international level.
The Government Office for Combating Drugs will continue to monitor current trends and actively engage in relevant discussions and initiatives that contribute to a more effective response to global challenges in the area of drug abuse and addiction.
